From Concentration Comes Peace: Training in Tranquil Abiding

Is it time to take your meditation practice to a new level? Buddha taught clear methods to deepen our concentration which will result in tranquil abiding.

Geshe Kelsang Gyatso says in The Oral Instructions of Mahamudra "...tranquil abiding is a concentration that possesses the special bliss of physical and mental suppleness that is attained in dependence upon completing nine levels of concentration, the nine mental abidings. Such tranquil abiding is a very peaceful, subtle mind.”

As we progress through these nine levels, our meditation object mixes more and more with our mind. The more our meditation objects mix with our mind, the more we are able to carry them with us throughout our day, completely transforming our everyday experience.

This month-long training will meet each Saturday in June with daily training at home between each class. Each class will consist of a short teaching, giving some pointers and tips on improving our concentration, preparatory prayers and a half hour of silent meditation time. At the end of each session we will have some time for Q and A.

By attending these four sessions, and maintaining this practice daily on your own in between sessions, we will gain the familiarity needed to practice on our own going forward. Over time we will be able to meditate for longer periods of time while holding our object with single-pointed focus, improving our concentration and making a deep imprint in our mind.
